Dear CYI Family and Friends,
This year marks the 15th Anniversary since the founding of Chinatown Youth Initiatives. For a decade and a half, the dedicated volunteer board, staff, and participants have developed youth leadership through year-round programming to address the needs of underrepresented communities. Thank you for your continuous contributions and support of our programs.
As our programs empower youth across New York City, and sometimes even beyond, CYI must be responsive and adapt to the changing needs of our communities. So, we take this milestone as an opportunity to provide you with exciting new changes to Chinatown Youth Initiatives!
New Members to the Board of Directors
Chinatown Youth Initiatives is proud to welcome four new members to the Board of Directors. Vincent Fang, Dan Ping He, Liz Jang, and Marilla Li are proud alumni of several CYI programs and have served in multiple leadership capacities within CYI. Chinatown Youth Initiatives also welcomes back Andy Woo and Elisa Espiritu, who continue to contribute invaluable vision and leadership to the organization. Revamping the Summer Leadership Institute
We regret to inform you that SLI will not take place this summer. Rapid, wide-spread changes across New York City neighborhoods (including Manhattan’s Chinatown) and contemporary developments within Asian American history and politics require that the Summer Leadership Institute also evolve alongside these changing contexts. We believe this is a unique moment to redefine the program to better equip the leaders of tomorrow with relevant, advanced tools and knowledge. Check back with us next summer at www.cyinyc.org to get involved in SLI 2016!
Get Involved with the 13th Chinatown Beautification Day and Youth Conference
What began as a mission to address the negligence of Lower East Side and Chinatown post-9/11, Chinatown Beautification Day has since evolved into a two-part event that brings youth from all around the city to participate in a unique learning experience. CBD and Youth Conference weekend starts with a daylong conference for high school students to explore leadership and community. The next day’s Cleanup gives volunteers the chance to not only clean the streets of Chinatown, but to demonstrate their commitment to the betterment of this community.
The CBD team are looking for CYI alumni to lead cleanup groups and discussion groups this August at the 13th Annual Chinatown Beautification Day cleanup and youth conference. If you are interested, sign up here. Let your CYI friends know, it will be a great chance to see old friends!
