Interschool Film Forum
In the Fall of 2004, CYI launched the Interschool Film Forum (IFF) to facilitate media literacy and critical thinking skills, and increase awareness of issues affecting New York City youth. The project consisted of a series of film screenings during which high school youth engaged in discussion around issues of gender, race, ethnicity, class, family, education, relationships, etc. IFF's program was unique because it targeted youth leadership development on three levels:
1. Youth coordinators managed all aspects of IFF screenings, including choosing films, communicating with community partners, recruiting facilitators and audience members, and developing training agenda and materials for IFF Facilitators.
2. Facilitators attended day-long trainings led by youth Coordinators. In addition to learning effective communication and facilitation skills, facilitators also learned to design and lead small-group dialogues around issues such as race, gender, and cross-generational relationships.
3. Participants attended screenings and participated in youth-led small-group dialogues about various issues addressed in the films.
