The Board of Directors


The Board of Directors provide the oversight and institutional vision of the organization.  Many of our Board Members are young professionals who have been involved with CYI in the past.

Betty Chen, Chair
Betty currently works at Goldman Sachs. She graduated from Babson College with Bachelor's of Science in business management.  Betty was a CYI participant, a facilitator for the summer program and first joined the board in 2004.

Elisa Rae Espiritu 
Elisa has worked in the past with organizations such as The Posse Foundation, The International YMCA, and The Chinatown Working Group. Elisa has been a member of the Board of Directors for CYI for two years. She has an M.A. in Educational Leadership, Politics, and Advocacy from NYU's Steinhardt School of Education.

Helen He, Treasurer
Helen is an Associate at Metalmark Capital, a private equity firm in New York. Before joining Metalmark in 2008, she was an Analyst in the Global Power Group at Lehman Brothers. Helen joined CYI's Board of Directors in 2009.

Sixiang Wang, Director of On-line Communications
Sixiang taught for Chinatown Literacy Project for four years and taught at the Horace Mann School He is currently pursuing a doctorate in East Asian History at Columbia University.

Alice Wong, Secretary
Alice was a former facilitator of SLI 2003, and has been working with the CYI Board of Directors since 2004.

Chee H. Yap
Chee graduated from Amherst College in 2006 with a BA in Asian History. He is presently pursuing his interest in immigration law as a paralegal at a major international firm. A proud product of Malaysia, Poly Prep and Sunset Park, Brooklyn, Chee is a big believer in the power of diversity in action.

Ricky Yu
Ricky graduated from University of Pennsylvania with a BSE in Systems Science Engineering as well from Fordham Graduate School of Business. He was a facilitator and program planner during CYI's foundation. Ricky currently works with the New York Stock Exchange's Strategy and Analytics group.

    Important Things You Need To Know Before You Apply:
    -SLI starts on July 3rd and ends on August 21st
    -Sessions generally run from 11am to 4pm on Saturdays
    -Chinatown Beautification Day (CBD) is August 15th (a Sunday)
    -SLI participants lead volunteer groups during Chinatown Beautification Day
    -participants are expected at all sessions 

  • We're in the final push of our census advocacy efforts, and Asian Americans For Equality (AAFE) has organized a final Chinatown census outreach event for THIS SATURDAY, April 17th from 11am-4pm. We'll be meeting at 11am in front of AAFE office, 108 Norfolk between Rivington and Delancey (near F, J, M, Z, Delancey/Essex stop). We'll be doing both street outreach and phone banking, so bring your phones and chargers if you can. See the attached flyer for more info.

  • With the success of last year’s Chinatown Beautification Day (CBD) weekend, CYI will continue CBD as a two-day event comprising of a Youth Conference and Beautification Day.  The Youth Conference emphasizes the strength and importance of youth activism and solidarity, while Beautification day demonstrates unity in action.   

  • CYI is currently in search of candidates to fill the following positions:

    Coordinator, Facilitator and Participant Outreach Committee Member

    All positions are unpaid, but CYI is more than willing to work with colleges so that summer staff can receive internship and/or school credits.
